The Villages Recreation Department Shuffleboard Rules

(Revised Mardi 2004)

Object of the Game

The object of the game of Shuffleboard is to outscore your opponent by sliding your similar colored discs with a shuffleboard cue into scoring areas at the opposite end of the court.

Teams

1. A shuffleboard team consists of any combination of two (2) people.

2. If a league is designated a men's or women's league the teams must be all one gender.

3. A team will forfeit each game if the members are not present within a 10 minute "grace period" of the actual scheduled start time.

Scoring

       I. A disc must be completely within the white lines of a scoring zone to count. Any position of a disc touching any line will not score. The disc must remain on the court at this position.

2. Scoring zones will be labeled as follows:

10 points - Tip of Triangle

8 points - Two middle zones of the Triangle

7 points - Two back zones of the Triangle

- I 0 points - Entire back zone of the court nicknamed ~~The Kitchen"

Playing The Game

1. A coin toss will determine choice of color discs and team to start the game.

2. The players who are designated to start the game will be considered at the "Head Court" which is where the scoreboard is located while their teammates at the other end will be considered at the "Foot Court".

3. The team shuffling the yellow disc will start the game from the right on the head court. This player will shuffle the first disc down the court by using the cue. All discs are pushed from "The Kitchen" and played from their side. A player cannot cross over the arrow line in "The Kitchen" to play a disc from the other team's side.

4. Each player at the "Head Court" will alternate shuffling their four (4) discs down to the "Foot Court" trying to shuffle their discs into scoring areas or knocking their opponents’ discs from scoring areas.

5. After each player at the "Head Court" shuffles, points are awarded and posted on the scoreboard. All discs in scoring areas count. This is considered a half frame and the score should be recorded on the left topside of the board.

6. Players at the “Foot Court" will shuffle their discs back to the "Head Court" starting with the player shuffling the yellow disc from their left. Players will alternate shuffles until all discs have been played. Points will be awarded and posted on the scoreboard. All discs in scoring area count. After the "Foot Court" players complete their shuffles, this is considered a frame. "Foot Court" scores are always posted directly below the "Head Court" scores on the left side of the scoreboard. A running total is kept on the bottom right of each square.

7. After each full frame, the starting team will alternate as displayed by the "Team Indicator" at the side of the scoreboard. In doubles play, turn the indicator so that the long yellow /black strips are displayed.

8. Play continues in this fashion until a full board has been played. All games will be played out completely through the full board.

9. Each scheduled shuffleboard league match will consist of 2 games of 2 full boards.

10. To start the second game, turn the start indicator at the side of the scoreboard to black.

The team shuffling the black discs in game 1 will start game 2.

Shuffleboard League Policies

1.   Shirts and appropriate shoes must be worn.

2.   Score sheets need to be filled out accurately and completely - this is important for record keeping purposes. League score sheets are located in the equipment storage shed. Completed score sheets should be placed in the appropriate location in each recreation complex storage shed.

3.   If you cannot possibly attend a scheduled match, you need to contact a substitute player from the sub list printed on your league schedule or posted on the bulletin board. Anyone can substitute for anyone regardless of gender.

4.   Since shuffleboard is a doubles sport, it is encouraged that 2 players be present. Both players may be substitutes, and if the opponents agree, an individual can play both ends of the court.  If both players cannot make a scheduled match, this team should contact their opponents and upon mutual agreement reschedule a make up match before the end of the league.

5.   In case of rain, the Recreation Director makes a decision 30 minutes prior to the start of the league.

6. A forfeited game will be scored 75-0/75-0 to the team that is present.

Miscellaneous

1. Shoes & shirts must be worn at all times.

2. Players may give information on which discs are on the line and which are good only. Coaching team members on placement of discs is prohibited.

3. Profanity, rude or unsportsmanlike conduct will not be permitted and you will be asked to leave the game. Any player displaying these types of actions may be subject to suspension.

4. Above all, the shuft1eboard leagues are designed for players who enjoy a structured shuffleboard game. These games are for fun and relaxation. Relax and enjoy yourselves.
